Setting Up Your Self Storage Unit For Easy Navigation

Posted on

If you need to place items in a self storage unit, you will most likely want the interior organized in a way you will be able to find things without doing a lot of searching for them. Taking time to plot out your belongings' positioning in advance will save you a lot of time and aggravation once the items are inside the unit. Here are some tips you can use to help make your storage unit's interior user-friendly.

Categorize When Packing

It is best to place items in boxes or plastic storage bins with like items. Before you bring your belongings to the storage unit, organize them into containers with similar items or by which room they will be used in within the home. This will make it easier to find a specific item when needed as you will have a general idea of where to look for it before you even get to your storage unit.

Color-Code Containers

Adding some color-coding to containers will help you find items with ease. Designate a color for each room in your home. If you choose orange for kitchen items, place a piece of orange construction paper on the side of a box with items for this area. You can write what is in the container right on the paper. Stack boxes with like colors in one area of your unit, making it easier to find an item inside one of them when it is needed.

Add Some Walkways

It is important to be able to get to the back of your unit without needing to climb over boxes or furniture, possibly causing injury to yourself or damage to your belongings. Before you place items in your unit, decide where you would like to be able to walk to get to each section inside. Use masking tape to plot off these sides of proposed walkways on the floor to use as guidelines so you do not cover them with your personal belongings. This will help you keep areas clear so you can get back and forth between your items without obstructions in the way.

Make A Map

As you place items in your storage unit, jot down their location on a piece of paper. Hang this map on the wall inside your storage unit near the door so you can refer to it when necessary. Make sure your walkway guidelines are on the paper so you can see where they are located, making it easier to determine where your belongings are situated when you visit your storage unit to look for them.
